Righteousness

Matt 5:20 "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses {that} of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.(NAS)

The "righteousness" of the Pharisees came from following the Law and all of the restrictions that they had added to the Law. They may have seemed righteous on the surface, but their hearts were not in the right place. To be part of the kingdom of heaven, our righteousness needs not to come from our own selfish desires to "look good" in front of others or "seem" righteous. It needs to be a result of a changed heart and a covering of our sins through Jesus Christ. Through that, we will desire to follow the law to glorify God.
